We open to the barren snowscape of Ice Station Earth. Inside Ming’s throne room, he and an alien companion are confronted by the Defenders of the Earth with Flash & Lothar warning that this is the end of the line. Ming commands Beastmaster to stop the group. Donning what looks to be a “laser whip,” Beastmaster opens the hilt and drops in 3 tiny crystals. Thrashing his weapon, Beastmaster manages to whip up 3 crystal soldiers, at the ready, to take on the Defenders. Handling netting that morphs on contact, the warriors attack the Defenders. Mandrake is the first to respond with a blast from the Orb of Power atop his cane, however, it just serves to bounce off the robot and incapacitate the magician. Lothar steps in to defend his ally, however, when he attempts to grab at the crystal warrior, the power feedback renders Lothar inert, as well and the two are captured under a crystal net. The Phantom steps up to take on the three robots and at first, seems to be a match for them with some nifty acrobatics, however the robots quickly recover. Pulling out a bolas, the Phantom attempts to bind one of his robot attackers, but the robot quickly responds with another energy loop blast that energizes the bolas and turns it back against the Phantom. Captured, the Phantom is wrapped in his own crystal net. Always cocky, Flash confronts the three crystal warriors by pulling out his laser gun and firing. However, the energy blast bounces from the robot and changes into a crystal net the entraps our vintage hero. Ming is pleased, but is quick to point out that the Defenders Beastmaster has managed to effortlessly defeat are really only illusions. Ming commands Octon to send Garax to the African diamond mine to acquire diamonds and plans to send the crystal soldiers to acquire the larger “Jewels of the Universe” which Ming will use to defeat his enemies.
At Monitor, LJ, Kshin and Zuffy (the space alien) are practicing self defense. LJ wants Kshin to practice his concentration, but Dynak X interrupts the workout to say that Mandrakes London show is about to begin. Without missing a beat, Kshin tosses LJ over his shoulder and leaves to watch the performance.
From their control center, Flash Jedda and Rick are watching Mandrake from their overhead view screen. Flash comments that everyone’s favorite magician really knows how to put on a good show for his audience. Kshin along with LJ and Zuffy (the space alien) burst in the room to excitedly tell everyone of his self defense prowess. Flash is quick to silence the magicians’ adopted son telling him to wait till the end of the performance. LJ tries to cheer up the dejected Kshin, but Kshin dismisses his feelings. Jedda leans into to tell Flash that she wishes her father were present to watch the show with them, but Flash reminds her the Phantom’s responsibility to check on the rumors that the Beastmaster has returned. Kshin is familiar with the name as he points out that the Beastmaster has a reputation for being cruel to animals. Suddenly, Dynak X chimes in to say that Ming’s robo-forces have been detected and are heading to the Zandu diamond mines in Africa. Jedda is curious about Ming’s need for the diamonds, but Flash is quick to deduce that if Ming is interested in diamonds, then that only proves that Beastmaster has returned to his old tricks, with Rick chiming in about crystal soldiers. Rick announces plans to warn the other Defenders and Flash has the idea to jump ship to Ragnor Zith. Rick and Jedda, however are baffled by this as its known the planet is used as a criminal hideout and Beastmaster has put a bounty on Flash’s head there. Flash understands their concerns, but explains that Ragnor Zith is the only place to find orkite, which is understood to turn crystal soldiers back into their original state. Flash also realizes that Fasilisk are there to protect the orkite. The Defenders kids talk among themselves and decide that they need to stop Ming’s robots from getting the diamonds in Africa which would then prevent Flash from needing to get orkite in the first place. Kshin, along with Zuffy (the space alien) ask to join in, but Rick wants Kshin to stay behind and “coordinate” with Dynak X. Kshin totally buys that and decides to tag along anyway.
From Africa, the Phantom and his old friend Guran are working to track Beastmaster by following his obvious foot trail into a cave. The Phantom is concerned it may be a trap and no sooner does he say that, the entrance to the cave is blocked by a mechanical door. Then, the cave begins to shake, the facade of the cave begins to crumble, revealing a ship which then takes off towards an unknown island destination. Once the ship lands, its outter door opens revealing the ship has now become a prison with Beastmaster as their captor. Beastmaster is pleased to have his revenge on his old foe and informs him that he will be released on the island and hunted down like an animal.
Rick, LJ and Jedda have landed their ship in Africa and are using a Temu lightsaber to hack their way through the jungle brush towards the diamond mines. Unbeknownst to them, Kshin along with Zuffy (the space alien) are following behind; Kshin is convinced he’ll be a help. The kids find their way to the mines and observe from a distance the ice robots transporting diamonds onto their ship. In a burst of brilliance, Kshin decides its time to bolt past the enemy ship and towards the mines entrance. Surprised to see their teammate, Rick, LJ and Jedda rush to save him by running towards the diamond mines in full view of the ice robots who do not react in any way. However, from his ship, Garax has noted their presence, realizes Ming will be pleased with their capture and immediately begins shooting at them with the ships laser cannons. Frightened, Kshin and Zuffy (the space alien) freeze under the barrage of laser fire, but Rick calls out, imploring them to get into the mine. Once the Defenders kids are safely inside, Garax orders all of his ice robots to follow and capture them. Garax takes off in his ship, finds the Defenders ship and destroys it.
From inside the mine, Rick is chastising his younger teammate for underestimating the danger. Kshin tries to explain, but Jedda cuts off the discussion when she hears something in the distance. The young Defenders are confronted by a group of ice robots and forced to flee further into the mine. Laser fire from the pursuing robots collapses the mine ceiling and the Defenders realize they are trapped. Its not too long before ice robots begin to make their way through the blocked entrance and continue their pursuit. LJ has an idea, and while the ice robots are distracted by pursuing the others, he runs up a cave embankment, finds a boulder and gives it his best JCVD front kick. The boulder rolls down the embankment and takes out the ice robots in one fell swoop. Sure enough, the kids discover the boulder not only served as a weapon, but also revealed a secondary way out of the mine. However, the kids quickly realize their ship is in no way set for travel. Using his communicator, Rick calls to Dynak X at Monitor. The AI computer tells them that the Phantom has been located on the island of Tad (in the middle of Lake Kantowa) and that Beastmaster is in control of the island. Rick tells Dynak X their on it and before they know it, Zuffy (the space alien) has located an abandoned robo-ship which the kids take full advantage of.
From their London hotel room, Mandrake and Lothar are discussing Rick’s message about Ming’s plan. Lothar deduces that Ming must be planning to steal the Jewels of the Universe collection.
From Ragnor Zith, no sooner has Flash landed that his ship is overrun with his biggest fan club. Flash is on it though and releases a stun gas that manages to incapacitate everyone as he makes his way through the crowd with the use of Rick’s handy dandy minature-gas mask. Running through a seeming museum of trapped aliens, Flash manages to find a fasalisk sitting atop a bevy of orkite. Flash tosses a decoy ballon which blows up and manages to distract the fasalisk with an image of itself and then conveniently blows up. Flash grabs a handful of orkite and makes his escape before the fasalisk can react. Still at his ship, the bad guys have gotten over their initial stun and focus their laser fire on the escaping Defender. Flash ducks behind a control panel and uses it to release the trapped aliens which immediately begin to attack the band of baddies. Flash makes his way back to his ship, unmolested, and takes off. From his cockpit, Flash inserts the orkite crystals into his laser gun and begins his way back to Earth.
From Ice Station Earth, Ming is continuing to create crystal soldiers and decides to test their strength by shooting at them with a laser cannon and dropping a 20 ton weight on them. Satisfied with the results, Ming plots to send them to retrieve the Jewels of the Universe.
Later, at the London Museum, Mandrake and Lothar are guarding the Jewels. Lothar wonders aloud if perhaps they were wrong that Ming wants the jewels, but just then, the door to the museum is cut open and the crystal soldiers make their entrance. A cage falls atop them from the ceiling, but without missing a beat, the soldiers manage to break it apart with ease. Both Defenders are shocked at the strength of the soldiers, with Mandrake commenting that it would take more than an illusion to defeat them. The two watch helplessly as the soldiers make their way to the Jewels and take them. Lothar is not ready to give up, pulls out his laser gun and begins to shoot. The blasts, however, simply bounce off the soldiers and they leave with the jewels. Mandrake comments that the soldiers are strong, but not very bright as he pulls out the real jewels and reveals that the crystal soldiers simply took illusions. Lothar tells Mandrake, regardless, they’ll be back.
On the island of Tad, Beastmaster is planning to release both the Phantom and Guran in order to begin the hunt, but not before espousing the virtues of his desire for revenge.
From a tree, Guran comments that he understands what it feels like to be a hunted like an animal. The Phantom sees the oncoming Beastmaster and the two are prepared to spring their trap. Once the Beastmaster is at the base of their tree, the two attack him with fruit, which throws Beastmaster off his footing and into a spring loaded rope-trap. Taken off his feet, the Phantom and Guran celebrate the capture and tie up the Beastmaster. The Beastmaster isn’t bothered though as he tells the two that there is no way off the island. Just then, the three see one of Ming’s robo-ships flying in. Guran points out that the only weapon they have is Beastmaster’s laser pistol; Phantom grabs it saying that it will have to do.
Hiding from site of the robo-ship, the Phantom explains to Guran that there is a junction box below the wing of a robo-ship that will take the vessel out in one shot. From inside the robo-ship, Jedda confirms the Phantom on the island. Rick tells her to use her telekinetic powers to contact her father, however before anything is done, Zuffy (the space alien) jumps up near the cockpit window and starts doing a dance. Kshin asks what’s goin on and Rick recognizes a reflection in the distance as a laser pistol. The Phantom takes his shot and damages the ship forcing it to land. The Phantom isn’t celebrating though as he’s sure Jedda was inside. Later, as Rick is working on repairs, he is giving the Phantom his targeting props, while Jedda gives Rick his pilot props. With the ship repaired, Rick wants to take the group to meet up with Lothar and Mandrake in London. Jedda informs Dynak X to have Flash meet them there as well.
From the jungle floor, the Beastmaster manages to free himself from his ties and vows the hunt isn’t over, making his way to his own rocket ship.
At the London museum, Lothar and Mandrake are messing around with some of the artifacts when the team arrives. Lothar is happy to see his son and Kshin is impressed with the jewels. Mandrake comments that the crystal soldiers won’t be fooled by any illusions a second time. Suddenly, Beastmaster appears and is looking to make good on his revenge plot with the Phantom. This time its Kshin’s turn for a JCVD front kick at Beastmaster, however his effort falls flat. Kshin calls for help, the Phantom responds by calling on the power of 10 tigers, grabs a steel rod and wraps Beastmaster with it. Kshin is grateful and Zuffy (the space alien) tells the Beastmaster what he can go do with himself. Lothar tells Rick to take Beastmaster back to Monitor and the captured villain repeats his vow towards the Phantom one last time. Right after the kids leave, a trio of crystal soldiers come through the museum wall and confronts the three remaining Defenders. The Phantom is the first to challenge them, but is quickly swatted away. As the soldiers make their way back to the jewels, Mandrake creates an illusion of royal guards to distract them, but that doesn’t work either. Just as the soldiers make their way to the jewel case, Flash arrives to fire on the soldiers with his orkite-loaded laser gun which quickly and effectively takes out the soldiers, reducing them to a pile of rubble.
Later, back at Monitor, Kshin apologizes to the group for the way he handled the situation, saying its obvious he’s not ready to be a Defender. Lothar responds with this episodes PSA that simply knowing your not ready for something is a lesson a lot of people never learn. Rick chimes in to tell Kshin that in a few years, perhaps he’ll be ready for anything that comes his way. Mandrake quips that while diamonds look great on women, they really don’t do anything for Ming.
The end.
As Rick is fixing the downed robo-ship, there is an obvious audio goof; visually its Jedda saying the line, however the voice is clearly Kshin.
The sound effect used for Beastmaster whip is the lightsaber from Star Wars.
The visual for the Power of 10 Tigers is different in this episode, with the effect being clusters of tiger heads (three) (for a total of maybe 15 heads?)
In the original outline the orkite was not guarded by the Fasilisk, making Flash Gordon's mission far easier
In one of the exterior shots of the Defenders home base, the beautiful lush grass that surrounds the front of Xandau appears to have been replaced by a lot of dry land
