We open to an unknown statehouse. Two guards are perusing the property commenting about how eerily quiet it is. One guard happens to comment that they wish they could attend the local Mandrake the Magician show. From around the corner we see Garax as he’s scoping the joint. We then glimpse 2 ice robots as they quietly scale the wall to join their leader; all the while the guards lament how nothing exciting ever happens around them. Garax and the robots move away from the front entrance of the building to a nondescript metal door. Garax commands his robot to laser open the door and we then discover that Garax and his friends aren’t the only ones casing the scene. A young woman comes out of the surrounding bushes near the newly opened door and comments aloud that she hopes Garax will find what she is looking for. With whip in hand, the woman moves from the bushes to a nearby tree. From inside the building, Garax and the ice robots have found themselves in a room full of relics. Garax commands his robots to search the room, but he’s the one who spots an odd looking sculpture and begins a visual scan. Sure enough, his scan reveals “The Map of Tibet” from the interior. Garax commands the robots to “open” the statue, which is another of way of saying “blast it with a laser gun.” The ensuing explosion gets the immediate attention of the guards who move quickly to the area. From the rubble of the explosion, Garax notes the obvious booby trap and orders his robots to find the now displaced map. Scaling the room, once again, its Garax who finds the map and does a quick visual scan before taking his prize. Acknowledging the guards are fast approaching, Garax tells his robot followers to return to Ice Station Earth. However, in their attempted escape, the mysterious young woman utilizes her whip to skillfully get ahold of the map from Garax’s grasp. A frustrated Garax orders his robots to fire on the young woman, but their aim is about as effective as the average storm trooper. Giving chase, the robots pursue the young woman past the dumbfounded guards who cannot believe their eyes. The young woman manages to evade the pursuing robots laser fire.
From outside the statehouse property, Lothar and Mandrake are conveniently strolling by with Mandrake commenting that while his show was technically perfect, it was nonetheless rather boring and that he wants excitement in his life. In a classic case of perfect timing, a laser bolt hits the ground directly in front of the duo, knocking them down. Both heroes are fine, but Mandrake, of course, is a little miffed that his top hat was a bit scuffed in the process. From inside the statehouse property, the two recognize Ming’s robots chasing… "someone." Using the orb of power from the tip of his staff, Mandrake makes quick work of the lock at the entrance gate. Excited about the pending action, the two casually stroll to the aid of the unknown pursuant.
Stopping to rest at a nearby tree regardless of the hail of laser fire continuing in her direction, the young woman quips about the improving aim of the robots and continues with her on-foot escape. Losing her balance at the base of some bushes, the young woman tumbles down a small hill and looses consciousness. Mandrake and Lothar manage upon the woman at the exact moment the robots catch up to her. Garax orders the Defenders be taken care of, but Mandrake is quick with an illusion that makes it appear the torsos of each of the robots has disappeared. An obviously flustered Garax orders the remaining robots to retreat. Lothar wonders aloud who the young woman is, but Mandrake recognizes her as Atascadero. She wakes up and its obvious that she knows Mandrake too, but’s its been a while. Without missing a beat, Lothar wants to know about the map he found the young lady holding. Atascadero begins to explain about Ubris, a valley in Tibet having been cut off from civilization for a thousand years. Lothar can’t help but wonder why a place like that would interest Ming the Merciless. Mandrake notes that symbols on the map, indicate power at that location. Atascadero further explains that there are jewels lying beneath a volcano in the valley that can rule the sky, as well as crystals that eat fire. Lothar is still baffled, but Mankdake is certain it means Ming is up to something. Both heroes agree that because Garax got a look at the map, that means Ming will see it too. So all three agree for the adventure to begin.
At Ice station Earth, Ming is chastising Garax for losing the map, but without saying a word, Garax produces a copy of the map and Ming jumps on this and tells his robot minion that he needs to stop Mandrake at all costs so that he, Ming, can get his hands on the jewels.
Now were in Tibet, the trio are moving through the mountains using the map to guide their way. Mandrake has his idea, but Atascadero reminds him that he sucks at direction and the two begin to bicker. Lothar chastises the two of them and is certain that he knows the right way wether his companions like it or not. Later on, the three find themselves at the entrance to a suspended bridge. Atascadero is more than happy to let one of her male companions go first. From a distance, Garax and his ice robots have spotted the small group and begin firing on them. Still having been unable to ascertain would would be the first across the bridge, Atascadero wastes no time in order to avoid the oncoming blasts. Quickly making both an escape and their way across the bridge, Atascadero reveals that the map indicates a hidden entrance to the volcano, they just need to figure out where it is. Mandrake’s more concerned with a solution to their immediate situation first.
Surviving their fall, the group find themselves in a cave. Using the orb of power to light their way through the cave, the three being to try and figure out where they are. Atascadero notices Mandrake favoring his shoulder, but he dismisses her while still noting her concern. Lothar needs the two to focus, but before anyone knows what’s happening, the walls close in around them and the three are trapped. At first Lothar tries the direct approach, but is not entirely successful. Not giving up, Atascadero notices a gap at the ceiling and asks Mandrake for a lift. Hoisting the young lady up, Atascadero finds the gears that are moving the walls, but nothing to stop them. Utilizing her handy-dandy whip, Atascadero manages to dismantle the gears and the three are free to continue their journey because the enclosed walls have now also seemingly disappeared.
We now shift focus to a Monastery where the Warlord Ishida is taking an audience from the Dali Lama at the behest of the warlords daughter Shoko. When the Dali Lama asks Ishida what he can do for him, Ishida takes a threatening tone and demands the “jewels of power.” This doesn’t surprise the Dali Lama as he reminds Ishida that once there was peace until he came along.
Ishida is not concerned and demands the jewels be brought to him in one hours time… or else.
We then find ourselves witnessing an erupting volcano with the lava flowing down the side of the mountain. The Defenders kids LJ, Rick, Jedda along with Kisa are making a run for it. Jedda calls out to Rick telling him to hurry up otherwise the lava will catch up to them. Rick however is frustrated as he feels like this isn’t something he needs to do because, come-on, when oh when will they ever have to deal with an erupting volcano? Rick stops running and confronts the oncoming lava even as LJ is pressuring him to keep going. Jedda even goes so far as to grab Rick’s arm to get him to keep running, but he simply pushes her down and waits for the rush of lava. When it finally overtakes them, the Phantom calls for the simulation to end. An annoyed Flash confronts his son and wants to know why he couldn’t follow orders like the others. The Phantom is quick to add that the simulation was based on a scenario that he himself had experienced. Rick, though, reiterates that he’ll never have to face an erupting volcano. Flash changes his tact and tells his son directly that should the event arise he would surely would not make it out alive. Dynak X interrupts to tell the team that the AI computer has located Mandrake and Lothar deep in valley of Ubris. The Phantom obviously knows about Ubris and he is very concerned. When LJ enquires about the location, all the Phantom will say is that its a place of “great danger.” The Defenders leave Monitor via the Phantom Skull Copter and individual Sword Ships (product placement).
Meanwhile, Mandrake, Lothar and Atascadero continue their search through the caves. Lothar notices a strange orange glow ahead and the group investigate. They come upon a shrine with Atascadero claiming they have found the 3 lost jewels of Tibet.
On their way to the valley, the pursing Defenders get an exposition dump from the Phantom explaining that his ancestors have worked to preserve the legend of the jewels and keep them away from bad people for hundreds of years. Rick seems surprised the Phantom believes in the legend of the jewels, but Flash is quick to tell his wayward son not to dismiss old legends so easily. The Phantom agrees and stipulates that if the jewels fall into the wrong hands there’s gonna be big trouble.
From atop the monastery, Garax is surveying the volcano and announces that he has located the jewels. With artillery located conveniently behind him, he orders the cannons to fire on the volcano.
From inside the volcano, the alien-embodied Mandrake, Lothar and Atascadero feel the impact of the cannon blasts and move immediately to secure the jewels.
From the monastery, Garax orders the continued barrage of artillery fire onto the volcano.
At one point, one of the blast makes its way through the rock face and into the chamber with our three possessed adventurers. Atascadero is the first to recognize the danger the jewels are in and begins to chant. From the chamber, a bolt of energy forms and shoots out into deep space where it comes into contact with a distant asteroid. After several moments, the asteroid looses its cohesion and a dragon-like creature emerges and begins to make its way towards earth.
Atop the monastery, Garax continues to fire at the volcano.
Inside, the still possessed Mandrake, Lothar and Atascadero have grabbed the jewels and are ascending an embankment regardless of the falling debris around them. Mandrake is struck in the head by a falling rock and falls to the ground, dropping the jewel. When he awakes, he appears to be out from under the influence of the jewel and calls out for his friends who have continued up the embankment. Finally catching up with them and attempting to grab ahold of Atascadero, who, still under the influence of the jewel, swats Mandrake away like a fly. As he gets up, Mandrake begins to fully appreciate the situation.
From inside the monastery, Shoko rushes in to tell her father the volcano is under attack by strange ice robots. Ishida realizes they must be there for the jewels and orders his forces to attack.
Within no time, marauding warriors billow from the monastery running towards the volcano ready for a confrontation at any second.
Meanwhile, both Lothar and Atascadaro are making their way through the volcano to an opening when Mandrake catches up with them imploring them to stop and warning them of Ming’s forces outside. No sooner, Garax calls out to Mandrake and demands he surrender the jewels of power. Mandrake challenges him, but before the robot can respond, a hail of boulders starts to assail the robots and Garax is forced to abandon his capture as they deal with the attacking army of Ishida.
Elsewhere, the rest of the Defenders are zeroing in on the Tibetan valley led by the Phantom who warns his friends to follow him carefully through the Kybourg Pass. Making their way, LJ warns Jedda about the turbulent wind and Kshin along with Zuffy (the space alien) wonder if their going to make it, but Flash isn’t worried; he’s got this. Making their way through the pass, Flash immediately notices the action at the base of the volcano. The warriors continue their way up the mountain wall attacking Garax and his robot minions.
Mandrake continues to follow his possessed friends up the mountain, but reasons that he somehow has to break the spell. Focusing his telepathic powers, Mandrake is able to reach out and break the spell, with Lothar coming out of it and wondering where he is. Atascadero wakes and through her disorientation seems to remember that the jewels are actually eggs. Lothar takes it a step farther and realizes their eggs of an ancient dragon. Mandrake jumps in to tell them both that it was in fact not a dream and they need to get the eggs to safety or there’s gonna be hell to pay with momma dragon.
As the volcano continues to erupt, from out of the sky comes the mother dragon heading straight towards the ensuing battle.
At the volcano base, the Defenders find a cliff and make their landing.
With the entire team reunited, the Phantom warns everyone that the jewels of power must never be touched, but Mandrake can only quip about the care and concern his friend has for his well being. From the peak of the volcano, the lava begins to flow uncontrollably and in the Defenders direction. Flash orders everyone to make a run for it. At that moment both Garax and Ishida realize that the Defenders have the jewels of power and command their forces to obtain the prize. Cornered from all sides at one point, Flash wants to make an escape using their transportation. However he is stopped by the Phantom who tells him that the jewels cannot be allowed to leave and is so focused on that directive that he begins to physically restrain his teammate and friend. Suddenly, mama dragon shows up and everyone is freaking out. The Phantom steps in to say the prophecy is coming true and the jewels need to be returned to their resting place. With bolts from its eyes, the dragon hits the trio holding the jewels and they’re suddenly possessed again and walking back up the mountain chanting about the duty they must fulfill. With the lava barreling down on them, Rick jumps to their rescue, pushes them out of the way which in turn causes the jewels to launch into the air and over a cliff. The dragon swoops in to grab the flying jewels, swings back around and drops them into the erupting volcano. From out of the lava flies three baby dragon who returns to meet their mother and make their way back out into space.
Seeing his prize fly away, Garax pivots with the intention of at least having the opportunity to destroy Flash, but the Phantom jumps in to protect his friend and comrade from the barrage of laser fire. Flash is appreciative and the two make up; no harm no foul. Garax continues his assault and the Defenders make their retreat with Rick confessing that he should have paid better attention in the Battle Simulator and we have our PSA for this adventure. The Defenders manage to make it to their ships and take off just as the lava was about to reach them. The remaining armies retreat as well and we see the volcano finally settle.
Back at Xanadu, the Defenders are all working out together. Dynak X informs Flash that Ishida and his army have left the monastery and returned to the valley. Jedda wonders if Mandrake will ever be the same. From the balcony, he and Atascadero are sharing an intimate moment with her asking Mandrake to join her, again. Turning down her temping offer with a kiss on the cheek, Mandrake tells her he has a duty to fulfill. It’s ok though, as she swings off to leave, Atascadero tells him that it could have been fun.
The end.
